Very good website, it was good to hear Campbell Slimon who I remember from my visits to Dalwhinnie in the sixties. My Grandfather John Mclellan was Shepherd working for Mr Slimon senior. He moved from Perthshire with his wife Christina and family Cathy, Angus, Marion, John (my father) and Donnie to Dalwhinnie in the early thirties living at the Shepherds Cottage on the south side of Loch Ericht then about 1940 moved to Dalwhinnie Begg where he stayed until he retired about 1972. As a boy I enjoyed going to Dalwhinnie helping my Grandfather in the school holidays. I remember helping him gather sheep from the hills to the south herding them along the old A9 through the village where my job was out in front slowing down the traffic, you could not do that now! I also have fond memories of the clipping where there would be a huge gathering of men clipping hundreds of sheep all done with hand shears. The boys would roll the fleece and cart up to the huge sacks in the wool shed. My auntie would be in the kitchen with other women preparing lots of food and we would have a great feast and tea. At the end of a long hard day the workmen had a beer and a dram while telling stories.
