From the "Orkney Blast" - a military periodical. The "Northern Base" was "Scapa Flow" which he flew to from Dalcross, Inverness in his US " C 47 Dakota" landing at "RNAS Scatston" - now a Kirkwall Industrial Estate. He was on board HMS Tyne - destroyer depot ship, and HMS Rodney - the biggest battleship to bombard the "D Day" beaches and the French city of Caen withe her 16 inch gubs. She was broken up at Rosyth and Inverkeithing in Fife in 1948.
